Blue Ridge and Helen are two very different mountain towns, about 50 miles (roughly 49–54, depending on route), which most route planners put at roughly an hour to an hour and a quarter apart. This plan gives you a slow day around Blue Ridge, a full day in and around Helen, and an easy last morning before the drive home. It works with a single cabin base in Blue Ridge (Helen as a day trip) or with one night in each town.
| Day | Base | Highlights |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Blue Ridge | Scenic railway or Toccoa River, downtown, dinner in town |
| 2 | Helen (day trip or overnight) | Anna Ruby Falls, Unicoi Lake, downtown Helen, tubing (summer) or a winery |
| 3 | Helen → Blue Ridge → home | Nora Mill, then a short waterfall walk or Mercier Orchards on the way back |
Day 1: Blue Ridge

- Morning: ride the Blue Ridge Scenic Railway to McCaysville/Copperhill and back (the extended trip runs about 4 hours, with a layover in McCaysville), or float the Toccoa in summer. Details are in our Blue Ridge weekend itinerary.
- Afternoon: walk downtown Blue Ridge and settle into your cabin. Pick up groceries for tomorrow's early start.
- Evening: dinner in town. See where to eat in Blue Ridge.
Day 2: Over the mountain to Helen
Early morning: drive to Helen (roughly 1–1¼ hours)
Leave Blue Ridge by about 7:45–8 a.m. to reach Anna Ruby Falls around opening time (9 a.m. per both the FIND Outdoors and Forest Service pages). Fall and Oktoberfest weekends fill the roads into Helen by late morning, so earlier is better.
Morning: Anna Ruby Falls and Unicoi Lake

- Anna Ruby Falls: about 0.8 mile round trip on a paved, sometimes steep trail to twin falls ($6 ages 16+, 15 and under free, per FIND Outdoors; not covered by the Georgia ParkPass).
- Unicoi State Park: on the way back down, walk part of the easy 2.5-mile Lake Trail, or swim or paddle in summer (ParkPass parking fee applies).
Midday: downtown Helen
Park once and walk Main Street: lunch at a German restaurant or riverside tavern, a stop at the Welcome Center on Bruckenstrasse, and fudge from the candy kitchen. Our Downtown Helen section has addresses and official links.
Afternoon: pick one
- Summer: tube the Chattahoochee with Cool River Tubing or Helen Tubing (about 1–2.5 hours depending on the run).
- Fall: Oktoberfest at the Festhalle (2026: Thursday–Sunday in September, then daily October 1–November 1).
- Any season, our pick: an afternoon at Yonah Mountain Vineyards, roughly 10–15 minutes south of Helen near Cleveland. We visited and loved it. Check hours, tastings and reservations on their site first, and bring a designated driver. Closer to town, Habersham Winery is just south of Helen.

Evening: stay or drive back
Option A, stay in Helen: book one night near town (cabins on Vrbo · hotels & lodges on Expedia · or the lodge at Unicoi, booked direct). Option B, back to Blue Ridge: plan the roughly hour-plus mountain drive before dark if you can, since curvy two-lane roads are slower at night.
Day 3: Nora Mill and an easy way home

- If you stayed in Helen: stop at Nora Mill Granary (7107 S Main St), the 1876 water-powered gristmill, for grits and flour to take home. Then head back toward Blue Ridge or straight home.
- Back near Blue Ridge: take the short walk to Fall Branch Falls (about 0.9 mile round trip) or stop at Mercier Orchards for fried pies and cider. Details are in our easy hikes guide.
- Heading to Atlanta? Helen is already partway, roughly 85–90 miles north of the city, so families from Atlanta can end the trip in Helen.
Seasonal notes
| Season | Adjust |
|---|---|
| Summer | Tubing season (roughly Memorial Day–Labor Day); Unicoi beach and paddling. Go early to beat crowds. |
| Fall | Oktoberfest and leaf season mean heavy weekend traffic in Helen. Pick a weekday for Day 2 if you can, and book stays early. |
| Winter | Quieter streets; check Anna Ruby Falls holiday closures (Thanksgiving, Christmas Eve and Christmas Day) and watch for icy mountain roads. |
| Spring | Waterfalls often run strong after rain; some tubing outfitters open on select weekends. |
Our Helen tips
- It's an easy side trip. Helen is about an hour from Blue Ridge (roughly an hour to an hour and a quarter), so it works as a day trip from a Blue Ridge cabin. On fall and Oktoberfest weekends, leave early.
- Save an afternoon for Yonah Mountain Vineyards. We went and it was awesome, a great place for an afternoon. It's roughly 10–15 minutes south of Helen near Cleveland. Check their hours, tastings and reservations first, and bring a designated driver.
- Bringing the dog? We travel with our corgi, Charlotte, so we always read the pet rules first. "Pet-friendly" listings can limit the number or size of dogs and add fees.
- Go by the season. Tubing is mostly a summer thing, and Oktoberfest runs from September into early November. Confirm hours and dates with each business before you go, because they change.
- Book October stays early. Leaf season and Oktoberfest fill Helen up.
